Lost Innocence

When I was five, the standing water froze
In the dip that centered our backyard
Grandpa bought me crimson skates of steel
Braving falls, I learned to swoop the ice
Dancing to music that my mind composed

The river froze the year I turned thirteen
I was forbidden to go near the ice
But my best friend and I ignored the ban
Ventured onto blue-white glossiness
And skated there, winter's king and queen

Seasons passed before I took my son
Buckled small red skates on tiny feet
Taught him to love crisp ice just like I did
To glide and conquer sheets of magic glass
To skate until his world with rapture spun

Ice was my friend, my joy, my winter glee
The word was one that brought my heart delight
Then came a monster to recast its charm
Who twisted ice and transformed loveliness
